Is it your first time taking care of an AC unit? If so, there are some tasks you need to handle.

These days, it’s more important to keep your AC in good condition. With average temperatures being warmer than ever, you don’t want your home to get hot during the summer.

If you’ve never maintained an air conditioner before, you might not know where to start. This post will tell you what you need to know.

Follow the five AC maintenance tips below to keep your air conditioner in working order.

1. Remove Debris

Before you start working near your AC unit, make sure you unplug your system. Once you do, remove the metal grating on top.

When you look inside, you’ll problem find debris. Make sure you get all of this cleaned out. Leaving debris in and around your unit can cause it to work less efficiently.

Either clean it out by hand or use a water hose to spray it off.

2. Check Your Wiring

Once you get your unit cleaned, it’s time to check the wiring components. Remove the access panel to your unit and look for any signs of overheating. If there is, you’ll see burnt or melted wires.

If there are no signs of overheating, check to see if all your components are seated properly. You want everything to be connected tightly.

3. Replace Your Filter

Just like an air purifier, an AC has an air filter that it uses to filter your air. Over time, it can become full of dust and allergins.

When this happens, the airflow will decrease. These obstructions will cause your air conditioner to work harder to cool down your home.

Even if you’ve gone through the different options to find an energy-efficient unit, you’ll end up using far more energy than you need to.

4. Check Your Fans

While you have your AC grate off, take some time to check the fans to make sure they look good. If they have any chips or cracks, then it may be time to replace them.

When your fans are damaged, the airflow your air conditioner produces is disrupted.

If your unit is older, take some time to check the fan motor bearings to see if they need to be oiled.

5. Look for Leaks

A leak in your air duct can be a tricky thing. They aren’t obvious, but they can cause a significant loss of airflow.

Light incense around your house and look at the direction the smoke is blowing. If you see the smoke being sucked towards something, then the chances are that you have an air leak.

AC Maintenance Isn’t Hard
