If you are redesigning an existing bedroom that is smaller than you would like, options do exist that will promote the illusion of a spacious, luxurious boudoir. While you might not be able to change the actual size of the room without knocking out a few walls, you can encourage a more comfortable and expansive appearance.
Choose Bright Colors | Bright colors encourage a sense of spaciousness, even in the tiniest of rooms. Talk to your interior designer about the best options, given your choice of furnishings and access to natural sunlight. In general, solid colors work best, particularly since tiny patterns can make the room seem even smaller than it is. Your color selection doesn’t have to be white or pale blue. You can choose any soft pastel or cooler shade such as gray.
Consider Not Centering the Bed | Although most people opt to place the bed right in the center of a wall, this strategy does eliminate some of the space found in that area. As a result, the room seems to almost shrink in size once the bed has been placed into it. An interior designer has experience arranging furniture in numerous bedrooms and can most likely suggest more than one option for you to consider.
Choose Less Traditional Furniture | Depending on your needs, you might also be able to eliminate some of the furniture that you currently have in the room. For example, if only one individual is sleeping there, why bother using two nightstands? Eliminating one of them is particularly easy if you have the bed placed in the corner of the room. Another option is to select a small bedframe, sleek headboard, and no foot board.
Minimize Clutter | While decluttering might seem like it isn’t going to make much of a difference, you might find yourself surprised at just how much space it opens up. Eliminate items that you haven’t used in the last year. Remove anything that doesn’t actually belong in the bedroom and find a proper spot for it. Any space that you open up by going through these steps enhances the effect that you’ve achieved by completing the other strategies above.
